About me My story

I am a traditional musician and shall be playing the English Concertina on the plinth.

I often practise after midnight so the 1 – 2 am slot will be appropriate.

Much of the music I play comes from old handwritten manuscripts that have been re-discovered in attics, libraries and second-hand bookshops. The tunes were usually the working collections of various musicians from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Quite a lot has been discovered about some of these men (and they are all men I’m afraid) while others are just a name and often a date written in the beginning of the book. Trafalgar Square, the column and its plinths, is a place for national heroes, but these musicians are my heroes and I want them to have a moment or two of public recognition. To do this I shall be playing through some of their old dance tunes to remember them – some of these relate to Lord Nelson and his naval contemporaries and it will be nice to give them an airing from the plinth.

This is not a public performance as such. More like a practice session - though I will play a few tunes for anyone on the ground who’s listening.

Biggest problem: what to do if/when rains for instance – which the five day forecast predicts – and heavily!

  • This was sent to me by Denis Slater, a member of the 'Chiltinas' ( www.chiltinas.org.uk ) for which many thanks.

Great stuff Dave, up to your usual high standard! Good to see someone promoting the 'tina to the world!

    Keep squeezing ( box & Fiona ),

    Cheers!

    Geoff.

  • So sorry I only got to know about your performance now. I would have liked to attend it and watch it live. Great!

  • Hello Dave,

Denis forwarded this highlight of your music to Germany. I'm listening to it during my lunch break. Great to listen to music, that probably hasn't been played for centuries! Regards to Fiona..... when will we see U both in Z.-heim?

    Cheers Inga

  • Well done Dave - a once in a lifetime opportunity grabbed with both hands and executed with panache.

  • Listening to you in France (Jane told me about you). Lovely nostalgic sound. And great to see people dancing.

  • Great stuff there Dave. Heartwarming to see the impromptu Circassian circle as well. Red Pettycoat hornpipe even - MY favourite tune!!!! See you soon.

  • I'm a South Shields folkie, you don't know me, but I thorougly enjoyed seeing this on the Internet. Great exposure for folk music. Next time get a daytime spot, when more people can enjoy the music.

  • Thank you, old friends and new acquaintances all, for your comments and praise. I'm not sure it was all deserved but I had a great time up there and wouldn't have missed it for the world. I'm having a bit of trouble adding the extra information and discussion I would like to the other half of this page but will add to it in a week or so when back from France.

As for the serendipitous merger with Grace Jones music I'm not sure I can really imagine that. I think you had a unique experience there for which fate and not me was responsible.

    Cheers, Dave

  • Very brave of you to play on such a solo spot!

Those hornpipes are still one of my favourites, I just

played the Trumpet hornpipe a couple of days ago in France...

    Brings back good 'Folkworks' memories.

    Love, Michel

  • Fantastic Dave. Dancers too! As one of the many you've helped to discover the wonderful world of English folk music I'd like to say a big ta love.

  • This could only be England! Thanks for bringing the Best of Britain and some fine concertina playing to the rest of us.

  • That was great, Dave. Wish we could have been there. Very brave of you and a wonderful way to share some of these fantastic tunes. Well done!

  • Fantastic!

  • Well done Dave, a great way to publicise the muisc. By the way, not entirely true that all the MS book compilers were women! Will contact you re this.

  • Stout feller Dave, great performance and well received.

    All the best Mike

  • Great show, Dave. Excellent tunes, and it was great to see people dancing at that lonely hour!

  • Very enjoyable - thank you for that.

  • excellent. so nice to hear those old tunes ringing out across london in the wee small hours.

  • well done, one scored for the pneumatic worm!

  • Great stuff, Dave: interesting history, good music. When are you going to do it again ...

  • The multi-talented Mr. Ball, archivist, caller and musician extraordinaire! Great to see you performing with your usual relaxed manner in unusual surroundings.

  • Rigs of the time, your take on 'honesty' in the here and now, brilliant, apt and how we must all feel!

  • Great stuff, lots of my favourite tunes

  • HI Dave!

we caught some of your hour purely by chance the other night and had a most amazing experience watching you play on the plinth thru the sky arts live feed on the web:

we already had grace jones' music playing on spotify when i logged on to one and other to have a look. You were there with your concertina and the two pieces of music mixed together live by my computer was absolutely brilliant!! it was the best thing i've seen on the plinth so far, and a totally unique experience for the four of us in my living room who got to hear you and grace jones play together!!! I just wanted to let you know that this had happened and thank you for getting up there and doing your stuff and makin it possible. THANK YOU! karenXX :-)

  • Fabulous! Thank you!

  • Great stuff Dave. I enjoyed the Nelson Touch. Haven't seen you since around 1975 and RUMC days. Amazing seeing an old mate again on the Plinth (blame Howard). You've had a haircut! Same voice though. Great tunes, great gesture! Rave On, all the very best, Mike

  • Fantastic Dave - well done!! - Sorry we couldn't be with you - would love to have been there in person, but we've been dancing to your waltzes courtesy of the internet!
