I am a traditional musician and shall be playing the English Concertina on the plinth.
I often practise after midnight so the 1 – 2 am slot will be appropriate.
Much of the music I play comes from old handwritten manuscripts that have been re-discovered in attics, libraries and second-hand bookshops. The tunes were usually the working collections of various musicians from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Quite a lot has been discovered about some of these men (and they are all men I’m afraid) while others are just a name and often a date written in the beginning of the book. Trafalgar Square, the column and its plinths, is a place for national heroes, but these musicians are my heroes and I want them to have a moment or two of public recognition. To do this I shall be playing through some of their old dance tunes to remember them – some of these relate to Lord Nelson and his naval contemporaries and it will be nice to give them an airing from the plinth.
This is not a public performance as such. More like a practice session - though I will play a few tunes for anyone on the ground who’s listening.
Biggest problem: what to do if/when rains for instance – which the five day forecast predicts – and heavily!
