About me

Martin Maynard

I live in Pangbourne, Berkshire.

Amateur Radio Station live from the Plinth

Since childhood I have been fascinated by wireless. With using a handful of components and a length of wire, an electromagnetic field can be created that allows you to communicate across the world. As a radio amateur I will be setting up a small modern transmitting station and during my hour attempt to make contact with other amateurs and talk about amateur radio as a hobby.

I will be holding a conversation with a number of radio amateurs working in different areas including Satellite, HF Contesting, Repeaters and Internet Links, RAYNET and how the RSGB supports and promotes the hobby. The whole show will be live from the Plinth using amateur equipment.

Full details of the contributors will be posted here shortly after.

Ofcom have issued the call sign GB1AO (Golf Bravo One And Other).

Due to time, resources and the nature of the location I don’t expect to be making lots of contacts. I will consider it a success if anyone watching finds it interesting enough to make further enquiries. You can email me for further information: Martin@GB1AO.co.uk

Further information on Amateur Radio may be found at www.RSGB.org

Special thanks to:

Contributors on the air:

Giles Read - G1MFG Technical Editor RADCOM

Dennis Pibworth - G4KWT

  • Good effort, but I too think the shine was taken off it a little by some of the issues raised below. But kudos to Martin for getting himself put up there, and for giving it such a good shot.

  • First, well done Martin, that took some doing, I have read some of the comments posted, and yes, with hind sight I suspose that you could have done things a little difrferently, but that said I should like to see others do it beter, especialy if it was unplaned contacts, A very big subject so little a space of time, I have tried in the past to explain our hobby to sience teachers, what it envolves and the way it compliments the coriculum, one to one or one or two, face to face is reasonably easy, but up there on the plinth, you have my respect, all the best Phil

  • Well done....

  • Fantastic idea, well done on promoting the hobby in such an unusual way!

  • NIice idea but flawed presentation. Prerranged contacts, who wre not in contact, using only D-Star No mention of the educational potential .science, physics, mathematics or engineering.and how AR could be useful in promoting learning. A HF rig available never used, comnications possible around the worldut but not demonstrated? Not the best use of a very good platform for promoting AR. Good try though.

  • Great idea. But I do wonder if the reason he is bald is because of the RF floating around his head? Or was it boredom that made it fallout. A good lightning strike would have brightened it up a bit.

  • Very well done, I wish that others would bring radio, more into the public Eye.

  • Well done martin great ad for amateur radio.

  • In response to Gordon MM6YET who, at 15:39, 29 September 2009 wrote "Interesting, but why ruin it with D-Star?",

may I say that I find D-STAR to be a good VHF/UHF communications system, have had enjoyable conversations with radio amateurs in Australia, the U.S. and Italy, and look forward to its expansion throughout the World.

I was also the first contact made by GB1AO from the plinth, and my involvement in the event was not planned in advance with any of the other contributors.

    Kind regards,

    Ray M3ZRJ

  • Interesting, but why ruin it with D-Star?

  • Hi Martin, Well done. Good effort, but a bit disappointed that you felt the need to have pre-arranged contacts set up, who you appeared to be interviewing with pre-arranged questions. IMHO it would have been much more impressive if you had used HF and made some contacts overseas. 73's Gordon

  • I am sad that you almost never gave your call! Why not

  • Dear Martin,

I thought your hour on the plinth was a great advertisement for Amateur Radio.

I enjoyed talking to you, and hope we can meet up sometime in the near future.

    advice

if you don't have a garage or alarm it is safer to have a removable car radio !a dummy cover or one that doesn't look expensive they will smash your windows.

  • Martin:

Many Thanks for your efforts. Currently, I'm watching you live while you are discussing RAYNET. Too bad that you are not on 20 meters where I could listen to your QSO via amateur radio. Good Luck.

  • It sounds like you will have pre arranged contacts rather than pile ups.

    Good Luck Promoting Amateur Radio.

  • Isnt this all a bit dangerous!, can I borrow a receiver in time?, can we stream it to the interweb somehow? I'll deal with it if you like. Great Idea. Take a brolly, an earthed one.

  • Best wishes Martin. Our club in Belgium "Radio Club Leuven" offers its support and we hope that some of our members will work your station on Fri 25tth between 17.00-1800 our local time!! Lookout for the Oscar November callsigns. Please email QRV? I presume 80m.

    Best Regards

    Douglas

  • that's better.

BTW what antenna system are you going to use? You could run a sloper from the top of the column to the plinth and gamma match it against the lightning conductor, bit long for top band admittedly but it should tune ok.

  • There are two different times listed, are you going to be on different days

    Oct 2 midnight 3.775

    Sept 25 16:00 !7:00 Z

If you are on at Midnight, time here would be 09:00 Z I may be able to hear you at that time.

If you can state the Day, Time in Z and Frequency you may get a few more contacts.

  • Magic Martin! Let's hope the weather and propagation gods are kind on the day!

  • "Gulf" Bravo one?
