About me

I am a community artist, specialising in textile art. I used to be in a touring theatre company. I thought being on the plinth would be a good opportunity to use my performance skills to express something about what it is to be a woman, and an artist. I plan to use the time to carry out a mundane but

meaningful task which will give viewers a chance to reflect peacefully on how and why women nurture others, and why this creativity is unsung.

  • a great piece hazel and it highlights the truth for so many of us who are artists but have to forget ourselves becuase of the 'art' of parenting ...it is definatly thought provoking and not just feminist bollocks as one viewer intimated, sadly feminism forgot that someone has to look after the others be that a woman or a man,we forgot in all our relf searching that the little ones need nurturing and now we are trying to find a balance between self fulfillment and the needs of our families, keep up the good work hazel

  • i loved the part at the end where you got into the basket! you looked like a pile of shirts hehe :) very creative idea, well done

  • my husband does all my ironing

  • This web site doesn't do justice to the idea - none of the 12.am. videos work. Somebody must have got their zeros and ones in a twizzle. Sort it out please!

  • I was in trafalgar square with Hazel - it was great to meet so many nice people. A wonderful experience.

  • Its very interesting to see everyone's comments - all Hazel represented was domestic jobs that are part of our lives everyday. It has really struck a chord with many people, and for something so mundane as ironing it seemed to be very thought provoking. Some people have celebrated Hazel's inspired forsight into how we give 'ourselves' to everyday tasks (usually for the people around us who we love very much) and not to be interpretted as some sort of feminist dig. Well done Hazel, you were brilliant!

  • Hazel you are so beautiful. I found the whole thing really moving and peaceful. I totally related to the whole idea of an everyday mundane repetitive job but you made me feel as though you were in another place of your own secret thoughts.

    With love from Susan xx

  • Hazel, your performance piece was lovely and very moving. The long shot from the webcam gave you and the board a tender sculptural quality. It made me think a lot about this peaceful, private, meditative task that goes on in most homes every day unseen and to a great extent unappreciated. I mend a lot of clothes for my family, and I was happy you included some mending in your performance. You seemed very serene and one of the few involved in this project who seems at peace with yourself. The art garment at the very end was fabulous. This was the best performance I have seen so far on the plinth. I watched you for an hour from Auckland New Zealand - thank you for your piece.

  • beautiful!

  • Beautiful, elegant and peaceful.

Well done for not being phased by the boys heckling . . . . x x

  • I found Hazels performance very impressive,particularly

how she remained absolutely calm and concentrated in spite of the amazing amount of traffic noise, police and ambulance sirens and people calling to her. I think she

succeeded in what she set out to do. Well done ,it was a very interesting show.

  • you are the first plinther I have seen. I found a link to you from a mumsnet thread here http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/793149-Woman-on-the-4th-plinth-now-doing-her-ironing

I find watching you very peaceful indeed. I'm 8 months pregnant and drinking in your placid maternal energy!

  • I'm watching from New York, NY, USA. The ironing is fascinating, a beautiful demonstration of an everyday activity and person being elevated up with the heroes of Trafalgar Square. Even with late night revelers heckling her, Hazel's focus on her task reminds me of many mothers and caretakers that I've known. Go Hazel!

  • hehe - priceless, what an excellently creative use of your hour Hazel - well done.

  • Plenty of men work twelve - fifteen hrs a day and look after their children , cook and clean and IRON , and do the cooking and take their kids out and there wifes or girlfriends , tell me why is it you are portraying the woman that has to do all these things .............................hey you got bad creeses on ya shirts if u was a new woman you would have one of those battery irons they last for an hr

  • Well done Hazel! really proud of you!! your the perfect person to be on the plinth and i dont think they could hae chosen anyone better to do it xx

  • Really interesting idea!

  • Thank you, sister!

  • Yours was absolutely inspired!!

    Excellent

  • please can you do our ironing . if you can do it at this time of night looking that well in this temp then you must be a pro ironer.

  • This is making me feel very peaceful. Feel like I'm sitting in your kitchen !

  • What a load of feministic bollocks! Almost all of my friends do their own ironing, whether they are male or female. This is not "art", it may well have been considered a "womanly duty" way back, but now not so!

  • Nice ironing skills, but don't go too fast...you have an hour to fill!

  • You've just brought your ironing board on to the plinth - wonderful! The epitomy of the everyday. I might just go and get my ironing and join you.
