When I heard about Antony Gormley's plinth project back in February I signed onto the mailing list as a sign of encouragement. A way of saying, 'this is a novel idea, well done for coming up with it.' And there was the same thought when I applied to be a plinther, although I took a moment to consider what I would do in the unlikely event of being chosen.
I did hesitate about accepting the place offered, but decided it was a unique opportunity. Antony Gormley has had a couple of pieces of work in Winchester: the atmospheric Sound II statue in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral, and the exhibition of Domain Space in the Great Hall. I liked the idea of having some connection to another of his works, and this is my only chance to ever do Art with a capital A. I was relieved to have one of the 'quiet' slots since I won't have to be entertaining, which is just as well since my plan for what I'm going to do on the plinth is very boring!
Updated to add: Going to the 'my story' link above will take you to my blog entry about the experience.
