I have spent a lifetime studying the Classical World. As an enthusiastic communicator, I lecture on it to audiences from village halls to cruise ships. Among my particular interests are the study of the ancient wine trade. I am about to retire from my post at Newcastle University where I have lectured for 37 years. At the moment I am Chair of the Primary Latin Project, which seeks to reintroduce Latin to primary schools through the inspirational adventures of a mouse called 'Minimus'. Earlier this year we celebrated the sale of 100,000 copies of the Minimus book world-wide. I intend to use my time on the Plinth to celebrate the rewarding joys of Latin!
