About me

I have spent a lifetime studying the Classical World. As an enthusiastic communicator, I lecture on it to audiences from village halls to cruise ships. Among my particular interests are the study of the ancient wine trade. I am about to retire from my post at Newcastle University where I have lectured for 37 years. At the moment I am Chair of the Primary Latin Project, which seeks to reintroduce Latin to primary schools through the inspirational adventures of a mouse called 'Minimus'. Earlier this year we celebrated the sale of 100,000 copies of the Minimus book world-wide. I intend to use my time on the Plinth to celebrate the rewarding joys of Latin!

  • Grates sunt tibi habendæ, optime mi Hieremia, quod egregios nostros auctores pulchrá resonante voce a tam alto plintho recitasti tamque jucundé arridentium plaudentiumque coronam ad te atque Latinitatem arcessiisti. Macte virtute!

  • Well done Jeremy. Watched the whole hour and my work colleagues watched it too. We have had you booming through the office in stereo. Well done again. You'll feature on the highlights programme with that performance :)

  • I stood listening to Jeremy for a while - loved it- although I only understood a smattering of the Latin. Very entertaining.

  • Just brilliant, thank you Jeremy!

  • As one who is old enough to have matriculated in Latin at school during the war, I much enjoyed your Latin fun on the Fourth Plinth - particularly Pooh's poem. I think you got a better response than might have been expected, which is encouraging. I must get a look at Minimus. Good luck to you Jeremy.

  • What a hoot! Funus maximus....

  • Didn't Jim do something like this on the Archers the other week?!

  • Salve, Jeremy optimus est!

  • Go Unc. Watching you live. Doing a grand job.
