I am a solicitor in Norwich with a (relatively) unusual pastime - I am the lead singer in an Elvis Tribute band, The BlueSueders. I wish to spend my hour performing my personal tribute to The King.
Our tribute is heartfelt and sincere, as well as being as accurate as possible, as I will be on the 16 July.
I am very grateful for this opportunity and I hope the Trafalgar Square crowd, such as it will be, will enjoy my show as much as the audiences in Norfolk have done.
The aspect of the artist's vision which I most hope to encapsulate is "the distinction between what we look like and what we do."
For myself, by day, I am a solicitor, specialising in litigation. I am also a commercial mediator. Clearly, this is serious . . . but then, I have discovered that there is this other "thing" I can do. I love to entertain; particularly, to give people a couple of hours of enjoyment and see them letting their hair down.
The distinction is, I respectfully suggest (legal jargon for informing another solicitor that you are right and they are wrong, in a way that actually implies you are paying them no respect at all !), quite significant.
On the day - fast approaching - I shall be joined on the plinth by a little helper. He is the mascot of a Norwich charity, Nelson's Journey. The charity supports children who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. I am working on a Christmas project (Carols with The King) for this coming festive season, when we will be raising money for them - this will include me and a number of friends running the Norwich 1/2 marathon during the morning of the day on which the concert is planned - busy day! The event will include my band, The BlueSueders, performing some of Elvis' Christmas songs. The Stilhouettes, a female gospel quartet, and the Norwich School Choral Society will also be taking part, as will the audience, as we sing a number of carols.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the show and thankyaverymuch
