What am I like? Very literal, a tad socially awkward, give the appearance of confidence, love and adore the people I know, and increasingly, talking to random people in the street. Not at them. I don't think. I will happily become Jenny Jones' old lady rather early.
I'm a 'science communicator', which means I'm a bit rubbish at actually doing the detail of experiments but have good ideas and can explain things clearly. My job involves translating from science to English for a medical research charity, and I'm in the middle of writing some science reference books for children; my first ones so it's a bit scary, but I adore it.
I love dancing. Pretty much on a par with sex and I *really* love sex. While I like all sorts of music (apart from the turgid and whiny - Queen, for instance, force me to leave the room, Bowie, on the other hand, can do whatever the hell he likes and it'll be ok with me), acid techno does something peculiar to my brain. I managed somehow to miss the whole rave scene in the late 80s and 90s despite being just the right age. Only discovered that this particular music can make dance for *hours* unaided in my 30s, so I'm making the most of it.
Odd, isn't it, that music, dancing, getting together with friends in a group in the town or country where one lives should be so threatening.
There are (some) perfectly reasonable laws to prevent bad (nasty/violent/destructive) behaviour. But can anyone explain to me why dancing to repetitive beats in locations where the noise will not disturb anyone, is illegal?
So I'm going to dance. There will be music but it won't be terribly loud. No one lives in Trafalgar Square but even so, it's a public space, but even so, it'll be busy with people and traffic at 2am when I'm on, but even so, I would be a criminal if I did crank it up, and that's a real shame.
Ok, I'm simplifying a bit. If 10 people came to dance with me, *then* we'd be in trouble.
If you happen to be passing Trafalgar Square when I'm on the plinth it would be grand if you stopped for a sec and had a bop about with me. We can work out a simple queueing system to regulate the numbers.
Anthony Gormley (and many crew, I imagine), this is a great project. I've been really enjoying everyone I've seen up there and cannot wait to get up and make an exhibition of myself. Thank you :)
See you on September 4th at 2am with a DJ mix by Old Gergl (Serious Business).
In the meantime, it would be brilliant if you donated a £ or two to the good people at Amnesty International, Deafness Research UK and urban75. (Please click on 'My story' as that's where I can post links.)
