About me My story

Oooer . . . I never really thought about this before. I just thought it would be a gas to take part and never really expected to be chosen.

I took a BA in Fine Art at Hornsey School of Art in the 70's but I never felt like I was an Artist. I admire Antony Gormley's work (along with Rembrandt, David Hockney & Richard Long) because it seems democratic and not sensationalist or elitist.

I was thinking about carving a wooden spoon to eat my breakfast cereal from a wooden bowl on the plinth but having read the above conditions it seems I may not be able to bring along my woodcarving knives and hook tools etc.

  • Nice and slow, just what I like when time is at hand - actually was looking for a way to get a hold of a "stock knife", had no idea it is so hard to find a tool of this kind...

Thanks for the show, greetings from Alaska

  • Hi Rob,

Just seen your hour after getting back from hols. You were great and we were sorry we couldn't have been there encouraging you in the face of adversity. Your laugh was great and at least you got to eat your breakfast. Nobody else seemed to have brought a spoon (broken or not) with them. Well done!

  • Rob

Well done! Certainly put woodwrights in the public eye.

  • Nice one Rob,great to see you up there.Love the way you laughed off the spoon break and then fixed it with the gaffer tape! Wish I could have been there on the day.

Well done Robin, forever known this day on as "The Gaffer"!

  • "Thankyou for doing the film", Siena

"Your carving of the spoon was Brilliant," Curtis

    "inspiring and fun," Anthea

" A credit to Artisans for all time, especially the Gaffa tape bit and the crescent moon and the howling dogs..!" Andy

  • Thanks for watching folks and for the kind comments.

The lap shave isn't my invention - I found it on the net and adapted it slightly. Plans can be seen here:-

  • Great to see innovation in greenwood showcasing - good on yer mate!

I can see the strong lights will have made the carving awkward.

Could you have used an axe here, or was that forbidden?

  • We met Robin recently at TreeFest, he was such a lovely guy. It's really nice to see some traditional wood craft skills being showcased, this kinda stuff is an important part of our heritage. Lets have more handmade local crafts rather than buying mass produced plastic rubbish from abroad.

  • Hey Robin!

Great new horse - is this your own invention? Looks very neat. Well done, I'd never manage to get a spoon done in under an hour - never mind eat my breakfast as well!

  • Robin, I just want to say that I think what you do is fantastic. I only just found out about One And Other, and you were on the plinth when I first logged on. I'm an englishman living in the USA, and I wish there was something like this over here. I also wish I had your skill as an artist, craftsman, artisan, or however you wish to be represented. Your dedication and your participation inspire others. I know being on in the 4AM slot might make you think nobody is watching, but we are. Thank you for doing this, and you were brilliant.
