About me

I am fascinated by the spirituality of the Desert Fathers and people who did wild and wacky things for God. In the desert and at the margins of society the Desset Fathers, and Mothers sought God – a solitary way of life that has puzzled people down the ages. It has to be said that some of these early desert fathers were very odd – not least St Simon Stylities who spent many years sat on the top of a pillar! So I fancy spending an hour on top of a pillar, not years, and will spend that hour praying for the work of Church Army in the UK. Also I will display a mobile phone number for people to text their prayer requests in so I and others can pray for them during the hour and continue to do so afterwards.

I will display a Make Jesus Famous poster and pray for the work of some of the Church Army Evangelists who have dedicated their lives to making Jesus Famous. Join with me praying for the work of some of those in the Church Army, those in the weekly prayer diary that week are Kathy Green, Kinder Kalsi, Richard Waller, Bob Reed and Phil Baul. Check out how they all Make Jesus Famous at http://www.churcharmy.org.uk/pub/aboutus/about-hub.asp

I am 41 years old, married to Andrew and have three children. I am currently a lay minister in the Church of England as part of Church Army, who are about sharing faith through words

and action to transform lives. I am to be ordained as an Anglican Priest next summer and currently I work full time in the Parish of Sheffield Manor, whilst studying for an MA and trying to be the best Mum I can be. I am mad about my kids, food, guinea pigs, Volkswagon Camper vans (if anyone has one to give away, please send it my way!) and making people feel special.

  • Alison, I just thought you'd like to know that I have written about you praying on the plinth in the middle of the night in my Church Times column. It should be in the edition on 21 August (unless there is a major world event and I get bumped to the next week - I'm always the first to get booted out)!

  • Bless you richly Alison we are coming to the end of our holiday club and seen God work mightly. Your intercessions are so appreciated. The seeds that have been sown by your obedience will reap a harvest; we may not see that but God knows!

  • We have been away so were gutted to have missed it. We have watched it since and we both were so proud of you. You were countercultural. Just what Jesus would have done. Jesus did not give the answers in his parables. Hopefully your parable of silence in a world of busyness and Quick fixes will make some of the croud think in a few days time what it was all about. Go Geezer.

  • Hi Alison! Thanks for the 'honorable mention.' Much appreciated! Sorry I missed you live -- I got the wrong day...I started watching online at 2-3 a.m. your time Monday morning, instead of Sunday morning. However, got to see your hour on the plinth by a recording on the Internet. BTW, we love "funny faces" -- even if they are made in church! You are fabulous. There was such a presence of the Holy Spirit evident during your hour. The Lord was with you mightily! I was greatly moved. More powa-to-ya! God Bless you in all you do. Much love to you and yours in the UK from all of us at ASSIST News Service in the USA.

  • Thanks to everyone for taking part in such an amazing experience. I'm a little sorry I couldn't peform for the hecklers, one was shouting 'Do something, Jesus did thinks, he spoke to crowds', what I wanted to say is, 'Yes, you are right he did, but he also took himself off frequently to quiet places to pray and be with the Father'. I had planned to end five minutes erlier and chat to folks but the hour melted into minutes, and it was time to get off, so I never fully felt the experience of being up there, but did feel the experience of being very still and close to God. Amazing! Also one guy on the ground was saying, quite quietly, 'I know you, I know your past and all your shame, all that shame, confess to me and I will forgive you'. This put a smile on my face and in my heart for two reasons, first, I understand what St Anthony of Egypt meant about the 'demons' coming to torment him in the Desert, and two, after years of feeling shame over certain parts of my past, I know I am healed, forgiven and loved into life by the grace of God, and that in Christ I am a new creation, and there is no condemnation, no more shame, so his words dissapeared into the night and didn't prick me, I was just able to pray for him in love. How great is that? x Alison.

  • Such a strange experience to be praying for all those people whom I know over the internet in the middle of the night - Kathy, Kinder, Richard, Bob, Phil, Mark & Heather - the lot. And how brilliant that you were followed by Hannah, doing something very similar. I am sure that God will honour all those prayers. Well done Alison!

  • Hi Alison

Thank you for the priviledge of being able to follow you on the plinth and continue your hour of prayer.

Much love and prayers for you and your work.

Oh and Peter Graystone who commented first is a friend of mine too :-)

    Hannah xx

  • Or you could pray that some day that you - and other 'believers' - will very soon discover that we don't need the absurd notion of god to live well, that the idea licences us to believe in all sorts of other rubbish there's no evidence for.

  • Just reading teletext and seen you. What a great experience for you - we all think it's fab. Adele, Tony, Vinnie and Aidan from St Aidans. X

  • Please make a prayer that the truth of atheism sweeps the world, that there is no God, just us humans. To stop making war in the name of "God" and to use the human and scarce earthly resources for better things.

  • Hope your hour is a great sucess and the rain eases up! Keeping you in my prayers as you pray for those on your list and others who contact you.

You'll have to tell us all about it when we meet up in sept.

  • It's raining but I'd promised I'd be there and I will- with the banner and a spare candle running on battery in case yours gets blown out/drenched- good luck!

  • Hi, Alison, Here's hoping that my message reaches you this time. Just to wish you the very best, I really admire what you're doing, equally for going down the path of becoming a priest. Love & best, Mike, Sarah and Jakob. X

  • I don't often say this to anyone, but when it comes to Andrew and your good self, you honestly make christianity real. I really wish you the very best and admire you for not only doing this, but for making the move towards becoming an Anglican Priest. Not too sure about guinea pigs, we had six for a number of years and I could never get them to play 'fetch', however they do make very good dusters!

  • No one has responded to my plea for a Volkswagon Camper vans (if anyone has one to give away, please send it my way!) Perhaps I shpould haave put that first, but alas I know what my priorities ought to be. But, Oh Lord, won't you send me a Volkswagon Camper Van? and a full size one this time, one I can drive and fit in, not another dinky toy like the last time you answered this one.

  • Wow - what a wonderful time to sit and pray. May God Bless you greatly in your hour and may the people who do text you asking for prayer know God working in their lives. I know I will be fast asleep when you do this but I have included this in our prayers for the week ahead at our Church by way of offering our support here at St John's, Lepton.

  • You just continue to amaze me Alison! I'm just back from Rhodes and further inspired by St.Paul's commitment to the Gospel (that guy really got around!), only to find a modern day ambassador for Christ prepared to stand up in Trafalgar Square. Go for it girl - all those lectures with Kenneth must have inspired you, especially St.Simon Stylite....you remain in my prayers and you are a fantastic inspiration for your fellow ordinands on YMC. Love, prayers and blessings, Chrissy xx

  • Well done really proud of you and if Im to get out of bed at that time in the morning to watch and support you then you had better do as i said HAHAHA WATCH OUT FOLK!!!

  • This is great news.

I think that the One and Other is one of the most interesting and exciting things going on in the UK today.

It's great that you will be part of it and I pray that it will be a great success.

  • I'm very impressed - hope it goes well and your prayers are answered.

  • well done Alison. we will keep you in our prays and also pray for the church army.

sadly your Sheila and i will be asleep when your on the plinth but will take a look later.

God bless and have a blessed day

  • Hope you have a great experience and relish every moment.

  • you are a wondereful example of christian living and evangelkism, where do you get the energy, God bless your hour, you are a worthy follower of St Stylite - (greek for pillar) 5th-10th cent - mainly inSyria Egypt and Greece - and now .Ttrafalgar Square - best wishes and prayers Ken

  • Great job sis' in-law. I'll be sleeping in a tent at the time but my thoughts are with you in this great opportunity.

  • Alsion, my heart leapt up when I heard that you have won a place as part of One and Only. I think it is a fantastic piece of art. I've been to Trafalgar Square loads of times to see it. It is telling us so much about what it means to be human and what it means to be British.

I love the connection you are making with St Simon Stylites - so clever! I hope it is a wonderful experience for you. I'm afraid I am too lousy a supporter to come and see you in person, but I will definitely get out of bed to see you on the live feed at SkyArts.

The first (and best) sculpture on the fourth plinth was Mark Wallinger's jaw-droppingly beautiful statue of Jesus (called Ecce Homo). So you are in a tradition of taking Jesus to the heart of London. My lovely city will be richer because you are praying for it that morning.

    Much love, Peter
