I don't have enough money to be eccentric so that must mean I'm mad....hehehe..
I have come up with 1001 ideas about what to do on the plinth but so far I've dismissed them all. So I'll just do what I normally do when I go to a restaurant and make up my mind at the last minute. I think that makes me indecisive.
I come from a large family of nine, six boys and three girls, from a very small village in the North West of Ireland, Newtowncunningham, Donegal. London has been my home for the last fifteen years and I feel very comfortable here. My profile picture was taken at the top of Mount Errigal in Donegal a few weeks ago – if you ever find yourself there you have to climb it.
This is not the kind of thing I would normally do but I remember seeing an interview a few years back with a lady of 101 years of age and the main question was, as it always is, what's your secret? Her answer stuck in my head ever since, she said 'I never said no'……way to go…..she elaborated on this and told the interviewer that by saying no to new things, or things you have not yet tried, could be a lost opportunity, saying yes on the other hand could enrich your life.
I may not like the idea of doing some things but the thought of spending my life saying no is worse. I’m not great with heights but couldn’t resist bungee jumping off a bridge in New Zealand,
I didn’t apply for the plinth myself. It was a very sneaky friend who put my name forward and you can imagine my surprise when I got the call but how could I have said no.
I love the comment some people make when the turner prize entries make the headlines….’I could do that’……. yeah go ahead then…….it’s always best to say nothing when you hear that kind of comment. You may love or hate art but, one thing is for sure, the world would be a very boring place without it.
OMG what am I going to do up there? David
