About me My story

Being an artist I feel that it is a great opportunity to become a part of such a momentous art project. I would like to have my own little art installation. I will be on the plinth on 19th July, 11pm, so weather permitting, I will send down large, flashing, red balloons carrying messages that reflect my philosophy on life - on being human - observations - things I've learned, or trying to learn! They will be numbered and I hope some of the recipients will post their message and it's number on the web. There will be 22 in all. I shall have my bubble machine going too - hopefully - and my sparkly tunic in case the lights can create a glitter-ball effect!

My messages will also be posted on my website under 'philosophy' :

  • Thank you all for the support - it really made my hour on the Plinth very special.

To Chris Roper - thank you for taking my message seriously. I Agree that awareness leads to laws - but the reverse is also true - thank you. Often it is a small group that pushes the law through, but the law leads to much greater, widespread awareness. I was thinking along the lines of the NSPCC - women's rights -

children's rights - the RSPCA, etc. But it is a long process, awareness doesn't happen overnight and it can take decades to filter through other cultures. But I believe it does happen eventually. I compare the world's attitudes now to what they were 100 years ago - much has changed. Your smoking example is rather good - the smoking ban started in California about 25 years ago, and it may take another 25 years before it spreads through Europe. Yes there are laws around the world that allow cruelty, but fewer than there used to be - let us all strive to keep moving in the right direction.

Thank you so much for contacting me.

  • In answer to Kim Frank Claus, message number 3

    "3. Anytime a law...."

    ...............................

I showed this to a friend and he disagreed. He said that awareness leads to laws, not laws to awareness.

But I agree with Kim that laws sometimes prevent cruelty to others

for instance the 2-year-old-this-month ban on smoking in pubs and at work. As a smoker myself, I first grudged this law, but, now I wonder why you non-smokers let us get away with it for so long before, why you were such mugs as to allow one person’s smoking to cause so much suffering to others.

However, what about laws that allow cruelty ? For instance the unwritten law that allowed our Prime Minister to invade Iraq against the wishes of the majority of British people.

Why are we such mugs as to allow one person’s folly to cause so much suffering to others.

And the ongoing folly and cruelty in Afghanistan, opposed by any British person who knows what is really happening.

The best that the current P.M. can hope for is that WHEN the West loses this war it will not be on his watch.

Kim’s message also mentions organisations. The organisation of One and Other is so splendidly successful that it doesn’t need to use the excuse that there is a shortage of helicopters to get performers on and off the plinth.

  • Hey Kim, I loved your stint on the plinth, you were good fun and such a lovely positive and bubbly person. I visited your website and enjoyed your art and philosophy very much.

  • You were fab!

  • Enjoyed your time on the plinth and reading some of your messages. Good to read about your positive attitude in the light of your experiences.

    Best wishes
