About me

Rita - putting the I into ART. http://fourthplinth.blogspot.com

Why? Well, why not? An incredible opportunity to leave something for future generations.

For me, ‘One and Other’ means community and community means families. All types of families. I would like to use the hour to celebrate special families in my life and give them enormous thanks. I will also use this amazing opportunity to increase awareness for two charities and collect donations for WaterAid and ChildLine

PERSONAL FAMILY - Adrian, Katie, Mark, Paul, Jack, Joe, Nic, Noah, Carolyn, Mike, Frances, Brenda, Owen, Richard, Amy, Deacon, Ben, Matt, Fiona & Chris, Josie.

FAMILY OF GIRLFRIENDS - without whom, I may have gone crazy over the years. I’m afraid that if mention some, I’ll leave some out. But here goes: Pat, Samantha, Katie, Helen, Gail, Wendy, Val, Ailsa, Sue, Cath, Pam, Faith, Elizabeth, Maggie, Sarah-Jane, Jackie, Liz, Mary, Ann, Lorna and Sylvia.

HUMAN GIVENS THERAPY FAMILY - Ivan, Joe, all at Chalvington HQ, Bill, Piers, Wendy, Peter, Gail, Jenny, Julian, Ingrid, Ralph, Sally, Pam S, Pam Y, June, Hilary, Elly, Julia, Jane, Peter and many others.

CHURCH FAMILIES - St James, New Malden. All Saints, Marlow. St Philp & St James, York

SOROPTIMIST FAMILY - York, UK & worldwide.

http://soroptimist-gbi.co.uk Awareness. Action. Advocacy. By women for women. See below.

CHOCOLATE TASTING FAMILY AT NESTLE - Dennis, Richard, Marie, Amy, Sally, Loobie, Pat, Lucy, Maggie.

RICHARD BACON'S SPECIAL FAMILY (BBC Radio 5) - you know who you are.

...and not forgetting the family of plinthers.

When September 26th was given to me, my heart rose and then sank. I remembered that I’m running a stall for the Soroptimists International York Ebor in York city centre. We are raising awareness of the lack of sanitation in parts of the world through the charity Water Aid.

Then I though, what better place to increase awareness than the 4th plinth. So, thank to those who are having to cover my initial absence.

My personal favourite charity is ChildLine, so I shall collect donations for both.

  • Go for it, complete with the cistern (well, I had to get that out of my system!). Don't loos it when you're up there: flushed with success or bogged down with fear, you'll be great, and I hope donations will help the charities become more effluent! • One week to go !!! And counting! Have enjoyed reading your blog, and keeping up with the exploits (at one remove, thankfully). We know it's been fun preparing everything, and I'm looking forward to seeing the results (can't promise it will be 'in real time' though!) Have alerted the Aussie 'Mob', for whom it will be early afternoon. Hope the weather is as good as it is today (obviously, the sun won't be shining in London!). We'll see you in Coppergate later, and help make sure Cloud Nine doesn't become too comfortable!!

  • As a fellow Soroptimist of Garforth Elmet I wish you well for your stint on the plinth. As President I too have been supporting Water Aid and have highlighted to the general public in our local shopping centre of the fact that not everyone has access to safe clean water and sanitation. At a recent garden party held in my garden we raised £500. We are planning to do another campaign on World Toilet Day in November. I will miss your day on the plinth as I am away but hope to catch up with it later.

    Good luck and best wishes.

  • Your family of Yorkshire Soroptimists are backing you all the way.Good luck and have fun!

    Pat Immediate Past President

  • I am sorry I can't be there to see this well planned, and once in a lifetime event. I have been thinking.... one person who would have given you her support I'm sure - Miss Hackman! Our very best Good Luck wishes.

    Love, Carolyn and Mike

  • You must be crazy but in anticipation well done & I look forward to viewing your "famous for one hour " performance on the day - rather - later on video replay!!!

  • Rita,

I salute you. With a shared dislike of being too high off the ground, it would never have entered my head to hope to be part of this amazing installation. So glad you got a dark timing - it should be easier to deal with the distance from the ground. I know you will shine through it!

all best wishes for your day, Flora
