About me My story

@robbelaw

Anthony Gormley's work is part of the rich tapestry of Great Britain. It encourages people to stop and think, it has inspired many and perhaps infuriated some.I want to take part in order to highlight random chance in this world society.

Being selected to take part in One & Other is down to chance, a name selected at random from thousands. I am one of just 2,400 people who will take their place on the plinth for an hour, to create a living monument in a place that's usually home to commemorative statues!

I could have been one of the billion people on the planet who don’t have access to clean drinking water. Chance could have placed me amongst the 101,006 civilians who died from violence in Iraq in the aftermath of an unjust war. I could have been one of the prisoners caged, held and tortured, illegally, in Guantanomo Bay. Random chance.

My random chance has selected me for One & Other. My random chance has selected me to be one of perhaps 10,000 people in the UK awaiting a transplant. Being a UK citizen does not preclude anyone from these situations. I am simply, like all other people, an inhabitant of this world and chance plays a significant role in our lives. Become a donor, become active against injustice and oppression. Something to think about ...

here I stand ../ naked, humble and afraid / aware of my mortality /

where once I knew / life was forever / now I see / the inevitability of never /

and yet .../ with my soul opened afresh / I see the glory of humankind /

aswell as the futility / of wanton greed / the false measure / of petty need /

here I am / no axe to grind / at peace within my mind / I now understand that /

giving love is free / yet only received / if one can but see /

  • oh that's very sweet and silly, your last song!

  • Hi Robbe.

Good luck tonight, I'll be tuned in.

Mike and Sully would have been proud of you.

    Safe journey down

  • Thanks for all the comments and requests, here and on my Blog at www.robbelaw.wordpress.com and by email and phone. I am really looking forward to the event and to responding to requests on behalf of al the charities and good causes.

Please remember that there are souls in the world who would very much appreciate any gesture that you can make to bring more love.

  • How about going from "Here I Stand" to "From Where I Sit"? You'll need to sit down before the hour is up!

  • Well said Robbe!Man sometimes needs poems like yours!

  • Congratulations Robbe!!! I'll be on the other side of the world in Portland, Oregon on Sept 25th, but perhaps I'll be able to catch it online. I'll do my best. Nice poem too btw, very powerful. I just got your email and for my suggestion as to a poem to read, I know it's a cliche but I just love "If" by Kipling. It's over used on adverts and such these days, but it's still an amazing piece of poetry.

Good luck on the plinth. Take a flask or something is my advice ;)

  • Hey Rob.

Bloomin' great of you to get through, I shall be watching you from the comfort of my armchair and laptop.

    Good on ya kid.

    Cazza

  • Chance'd be a fine thing. Oh no, that's something else :-)

I'm made up for you! Can't wait!! I've still got my fingers crossed for Hallowe'en! xxx
