I came down to London with some Scots Music Group musicians who held a ceilidh at the foot of the 4th plinth early in August, and loved the atmosphere! The area around the plinth was buzzing, and it was a great community celebration in the square. The hour was aimed at raising awareness of the Scots Music Group (SMG), a charity which builds communities through traditional music, making long lasting links that cross many cultural and social barriers. Londoners and visitors to the capital enjoyed an hour of lively Scottish traditional music from SMG members - amateur musicians who have learnt to play as adults. You can see the Trafalgar Square ceilidh online here:www.oneandother.co.uk/participants/FiddlinChic
I was gobsmacked when I returned home from that trip to find I'd been offered a spot on the plinth! I'll be up there playng my fiddle from midnight on Saturday 12th September to 1am on Sunday 13th,
I learnt to play the fiddle as an adult, and it has become an important part of my life. David, Niall, Pamela, Sue and Vic, who I play with regularly in an Edinburgh pub session, are coming down from Edinburgh to join me at the base of the plinth, to recreate our session in Trafalgar Square
We'll also be using the hour to raise some money for charity, with an online auction starting as I leave the plinth. We'll be playing a lovely new tune, specially written for the occasion by Sarah Northcott. The tune currently has no name. The online auction, selling the right to name the new tune, will be launched immediately after my spot on the plinth. The money from the winner’s bid will be donated to a charity of their choice. It's a great opportunity for someone to have a piece of music named after themselves, an occasion, the family pet, or anything else they might choose, and to benifit their favourite charity at the same time.
You can find out more about the auction, and place a bid here: www.scotsmusic.org/events/plinth_auction/ The auction closes at 1am on Sunday 20th September.
